A fair first word to describe Alyce is 'Childish.' In so many ways, Alyce is still a child. She may look to be around 15 or 16, and time may be irrelevant on the 9th dimension, but Alyce has a very young soul. In this definition, 'young soul' refers to the fact that Alyce has not experienced much. Her empathy, her understandings, her problem solving, her dependency... All of these traits make 'childish' the best single word for Alyce.
An immature soul in Alyce's case refers to the fact that she doesn't get out much. Alyce lives in the Grande Library, which collects histories of many worlds and timelines. She can read them and become educated, but she herself has not experienced a life. She just sits in her library and reads, like a hikkomori. All of Alyce's needs are taken care of, from food to clothes, and between the Library itself and her Assistant Uai, Alyce is very spoiled. She's never experienced true heartache or want. Similarly, she has not experienced much joy or happiness. She's just there. This immature soul of hers therefore struggles with empathy. She can read a story and feel sympathetic towards the characters, but Alyce can't understand what they're going through. This is a purposeful part of her existence: Without empathy, Alyce cannot act on emotional impulses to change a story's course. She is meant to think with pure logic, and logic tells her not to change stories. And while Alyce is capable of sympathy, that doesn't necessarily mean that she uses it. Her cold logic causes Alyce to look at the bigger picture rather than individuals. She may recognize a character as suffering, but Alyce understands how suffering plays into a bigger picture. After all, it's just a storybook to Alyce. In a game setting, Alyce is likely to seem very cold hearted and detached from the world around her. She is likely to make bitchy comments and step on a lot of toes, just because she doesn't understand people. Alyce is never trying to be hurtful when she tells a crying person to just get over it. Likewise, she isn't trying to be stubborn when she doesn't learn empathy quickly. To Alyce, empathy is something undesirable for her job. Even when she realizes she doesn't have it, she isn't likely to rush to learn it: Grande Librarians don't need it. It gets in their way. So after all of that, it may seem strange to have read that her entire story hinges on love for Uai. As Alyce understands, emotions are what drive a story forward. Alyce's love for Uai started from the detached standpoint of a fangirl picking her best boy and going so merch crazy that she kinda kidnapped him. At the start, Alyce's love was more on par to loving a figurine. It's grown since then, so that's where we will stop comparing poor Uai to a Good Smile product. Her growing love for Uai contradicts Alyce's opinion that Grande Librarians don't need emotions, but also proves her thesis. He is her one motivation at this point. Alyce is actually learning empathy from him. She will need to learn to open her heart beyond her Best Boy, but their relationship is proof of that potential. At her current canon point, Uai is also her gross reason for bettering herself. Alyce just realized that the person she loves will die unless she can 'ascend' her soul. So Alyce will be trying very hard to mature her soul. She just doesn't understand how. Remember how she thinks empathy gets in her way? Alyce still thinks that. She doesn't realize empathy is part of bettering herself. She doesn't have any clue what she is doing, which is part of why she hasn't ascended. Her tactics are---- here's that word again--- Childish. She will try numerous hobbies, then quit when she's not good at them because "they're pointless!" She may make a bunch of new friends, then cut them from her social circle if she doesn't perceive a measurable benefit to them. Alyce has no idea how one ascends and most of her tactics are the exact opposite of progress. But she doesn't know that. She is, after all, very spoiled. Alyce has never had to lift a finger for herself before. She doesn't even have to physically protect the Grande Library: It is slightly sentient and protects her. Alyce let other people decide her meals, her clothes, her hobbies, even the books she read. She's never had to stand on her two feet before and is dependent as a baby. She is used to the omniverse basically revolving around her. When things don't go her way, Alyce will whine about it loudly and obnoxiously before trying to fix it. And that's if she tries to fix it at all. A lot of the time, Alyce will just abandon things when they seem broken. Not simply because she's lazy and spoiled, but because Alyce doesn't realize she could fix them. Once again: The Grande Librarian isn't supposed to edit books. Her soul was 'designed' so that she would not abuse her power. So while it is detestable that Alyce won't do anything to help others or fix things herself, she thinks that is the right way to handle it. Whining and being obnoxious will continue to be a theme in her interactions with others. Alyce doesn't consider others very often, so doesn't understand to filter herself. She will be emote fully: Becoming a sobbing mess in public, laughing when it's inappropriate, and yelling with uncensored anger. She perceives herself as being a 'good girl,' but rarely acts it. While she can learn social rules and follow them for her own benefit, she isn't going to spare someone her mental breakdowns just because they're a stranger. Lastly, Alyce is very naive. She has read many worlds' stories, but never experienced them. She does not know who to trust and who not to trust. She is also not going to be pouring her heart with the purpose of bonding. Alyce will approach people fearlessly to experience something new, but she has no idea how to culture a friendship. She also has little desire to. She's someone who has an extroverted personality, but no desire to care for tons of people. Alyce isn't the type to actively pursue a new relationship, but she also won't turn down someone initiating one with her. Socialization is hard when you're a shut-in who kidnapped your 2D crush. Did I mention that Alyce thinks that was totally fine? Because she does. Not only does she have little socialization desire, but she views people as characters. She's insensitive with no desire to overcome that. Sorry in advanced for her awful personality. Abilities & Inventory |
