A fair first word to describe Alyce is 'Childish.' In so many ways, Alyce is still a child. She may look to be around 15 or 16, and time may be irrelevant on the 9th dimension, but Alyce has a very young soul. In this definition, 'young soul' refers to the fact that Alyce has not experienced much. Her empathy, her understandings, her problem solving, her dependency... All of these traits make 'childish' the best single word for Alyce.
An immature soul in Alyce's case refers to the fact that she doesn't get out much. Alyce lives in the Grande Library, which collects histories of many worlds and timelines. She can read them and become educated, but she herself has not experienced a life. She just sits in her library and reads, like a hikkomori. All of Alyce's needs are taken care of, from food to clothes, and between the Library itself and her Assistant Uai, Alyce is very spoiled. She's never experienced true heartache or want. Similarly, she has not experienced much joy or happiness. She's just there. This immature soul of hers therefore struggles with empathy. She can read a story and feel sympathetic towards the characters, but Alyce can't understand what they're going through. This is a purposeful part of her existence: Without empathy, Alyce cannot act on emotional impulses to change a story's course. She is meant to think with pure logic, and logic tells her not to change stories. And while Alyce is capable of sympathy, that doesn't necessarily mean that she uses it. Her cold logic causes Alyce to look at the bigger picture rather than individuals. She may recognize a character as suffering, but Alyce understands how suffering plays into a bigger picture. After all, it's just a storybook to Alyce. In a game setting, Alyce is likely to seem very cold hearted and detached from the world around her. She is likely to make bitchy comments and step on a lot of toes, just because she doesn't understand people. Alyce is never trying to be hurtful when she tells a crying person to just get over it. Likewise, she isn't trying to be stubborn when she doesn't learn empathy quickly. To Alyce, empathy is something undesirable for her job. Even when she realizes she doesn't have it, she isn't likely to rush to learn it: Grande Librarians don't need it. It gets in their way. So after all of that, it may seem strange to have read that her entire story hinges on love for Uai. As Alyce understands, emotions are what drive a story forward. Alyce's love for Uai started from the detached standpoint of a fangirl picking her best boy and going so merch crazy that she kinda kidnapped him. At the start, Alyce's love was more on par to loving a figurine. It's grown since then, so that's where we will stop comparing poor Uai to a Good Smile product. Her growing love for Uai contradicts Alyce's opinion that Grande Librarians don't need emotions, but also proves her thesis. He is her one motivation at this point. Alyce is actually learning empathy from him. She will need to learn to open her heart beyond her Best Boy, but their relationship is proof of that potential. At her current canon point, Uai is also her gross reason for bettering herself. Alyce just realized that the person she loves will die unless she can 'ascend' her soul. So Alyce will be trying very hard to mature her soul. She just doesn't understand how. Remember how she thinks empathy gets in her way? Alyce still thinks that. She doesn't realize empathy is part of bettering herself. She doesn't have any clue what she is doing, which is part of why she hasn't ascended. Her tactics are---- here's that word again--- Childish. She will try numerous hobbies, then quit when she's not good at them because "they're pointless!" She may make a bunch of new friends, then cut them from her social circle if she doesn't perceive a measurable benefit to them. Alyce has no idea how one ascends and most of her tactics are the exact opposite of progress. But she doesn't know that. She is, after all, very spoiled. Alyce has never had to lift a finger for herself before. She doesn't even have to physically protect the Grande Library: It is slightly sentient and protects her. Alyce let other people decide her meals, her clothes, her hobbies, even the books she read. She's never had to stand on her two feet before and is dependent as a baby. She is used to the omniverse basically revolving around her. When things don't go her way, Alyce will whine about it loudly and obnoxiously before trying to fix it. And that's if she tries to fix it at all. A lot of the time, Alyce will just abandon things when they seem broken. Not simply because she's lazy and spoiled, but because Alyce doesn't realize she could fix them. Once again: The Grande Librarian isn't supposed to edit books. Her soul was 'designed' so that she would not abuse her power. So while it is detestable that Alyce won't do anything to help others or fix things herself, she thinks that is the right way to handle it. Whining and being obnoxious will continue to be a theme in her interactions with others. Alyce doesn't consider others very often, so doesn't understand to filter herself. She will be emote fully: Becoming a sobbing mess in public, laughing when it's inappropriate, and yelling with uncensored anger. She perceives herself as being a 'good girl,' but rarely acts it. While she can learn social rules and follow them for her own benefit, she isn't going to spare someone her mental breakdowns just because they're a stranger. Lastly, Alyce is very naive. She has read many worlds' stories, but never experienced them. She does not know who to trust and who not to trust. She is also not going to be pouring her heart with the purpose of bonding. Alyce will approach people fearlessly to experience something new, but she has no idea how to culture a friendship. She also has little desire to. She's someone who has an extroverted personality, but no desire to care for tons of people. Alyce isn't the type to actively pursue a new relationship, but she also won't turn down someone initiating one with her. Socialization is hard when you're a shut-in who kidnapped your 2D crush. Did I mention that Alyce thinks that was totally fine? Because she does. Not only does she have little socialization desire, but she views people as characters. She's insensitive with no desire to overcome that. Sorry in advanced for her awful personality. Abilities & Inventory |

World History:
To begin, it is important to note that this type of "ascended magician" is not bound by one world or universe. It is an omniversal concept that is found in many other worlds. Even if a world does not have a magic, it is possible for an Ascended Magician to be born from there. That is because Ascended Magicians are not born from circumstances in their world of origin, but from their own souls.
Ascended Magicians may also be called a Magnum Opus. The term in alchemy refers to "The Great Work," which is philosophically a "wholeness" of the soul. It is achieved through four stages: Nigredo, Albedo, Citrinitas, and Rubedo. Most Ascended Magicians are in the Citrinitas or Rubedo stage.
An Ascended Magician's magic comes their spiritual transmutation. They reach an understanding of themselves and their role in the universe, which allows them to begin overcoming it. Because one thing that all the universes under this omniversal umbrella had in common is the idea of a soul having a "role." That soul may be present in numerous universes, but their role is generally the same. For example, you can be a knight in one world and firefighter in another, but you are bound by the "role" of a hero.
That understood soul becomes the source of an Ascended Magician's magical power. It can be immensely powerful or just a spark, depending on how much they understand their role in the universe. Ironically, the magic is often born from a desire to resist that role. Most Ascended Magicians who begin traveling between dimensions are therefore faced with an inevitable realization: That they cannot resist their role.
Once an Ascended Magician has left their unique world, whether physically or mentally, they exist on the Grande Plane. This is an 9th dimensional space, which is to say it is above alternate timelines (6th dimension) and alternate universes (8th dimension.) It is a space between a singular existence and being omnipresent.
Ascended Magicians require a lot of magic to exist on the 9th dimension. To be fair and honest, most of them will burn out quickly. That tends to suit most of these Magicians just fine: They tend to be inspired by bursts of emotion that fizzle into despair. In order to survive in the long term, an Ascended Magician needs sponsorship.
WHAT'S SPONSORSHIP, YE ASKS?
There are these beings on the 10th dimension, you see, called "Concepts." They are what you would study in literature class: Concept of Hope, Concept of Despair, Concept of Dreaming, Concept of Love, Concept of Destruction... They are essentially themes that influence a story, or a world. These 10th dimensional Concepts are omnipresent and incredibly powerful. However, they are limited in a major way: By their omnipresence. When you are omnipotent, you see everything at once. That means that you cannot interact, but only watch. To interact would mean entering the flow of time and losing omnipotence.
So the Concepts 'sponsor' magicians. They give them a chip of their own power, which allows the magician to exist on the 9th dimension. In exchange, their new "Embodiments" enter other worlds and try to sway the story in a Concept's favor. This, in turn, empowers the Concept and allows them to support more Embodiments.
At this point, one last player in this omniverse's construct comes into play: The Grande Library. Also called the Living Library. This is an incredible space that defies all logic, even the logics of this omniverse. It is a space where worlds are stored in the form of books and art. Like a museum, they are put on display for magicians to see. Magicians may even read them. However, it is forbidden to touch remove them from a shelf, read them, or especially to edit them.
The one who is permitted to do this is called The Grande Librarian. They are a neutral existence that maintains the Grande Library. Only their hands can pry books from the shelves and it is them who grants reading to Magicians. And it is them who could edit a world in bookform, if they felt the need. Not that they do.
However, the Grande Librarian is not an Ascended Magician. They do not have a soul that has reached Rubedo. In fact, their soul is so limited in experiences that it never could become whole enough for magic. Because they are powerless, the Grande Librarian can sponsor the last type of existence in this world: The Library Assistants. They are Ascended Magicians that are powered not by a Concept, but by the Grande Library itself. The Grande Library is alive in its own unique way and considered to be very sacred. The Grande Librarian is not to be touched by Concepts or Embodiments. Her assistants, however, exist to protect her from those who do not follow that rule.
Personal History:
On that note!
Alyce is the most 'recent' Grande Librarian. Like the Grande Librarians before her, Alyce's soul was created in the safety of the Grande Library. She was 'born' appearing no less than fifteen, but with the emotional development of a child. As she read more books/worlds, Alyce began to mature her logic and understanding. However, her capacity for empathy was limited by her personal lack of life experiences.
That isn't to say that Alyce felt no emotion. She became particularly attached to one of the characters in the world stories: "Shi Yamato." He was a soul doomed to curse and die, but who resisted his role to the point it was almost a rule. Alyce's heart ached for his story and she can fairly be described as being in love with him.
So when a Magician form of Shi Yamato appeared, Alyce was an excited fangirl. None of the other Concepts wanted to sponsor someone as troublesome as "Uai." They viewed him, rightfully so, as someone who should accept his role and die. So it was a huge surprise when not a Concept sponsored Uai, but the Grande Librarian herself.
Uai is Alyce's newest and most beloved Library Assistant. Their day to day activities brought the helpless Alyce lots of joy. True, there were times when Magicians threatened her and her Library, but Uai always rose to the challenge. Alyce began to fall more and more in love with her Best Boy, though she recognized her love was tragic. Uai had been seeking sponsorship so that he could protect the fate of his lover, Hana, and he continued to love her even when they were eternally apart. Alyce has long since realized that Uai will never love her the way that she loves him. Even as Concepts sometimes tell Alyce that Uai's glitches are a threat to the omniverse, she believes in him and adores him.
Their peaceful life was not to be a permanent thing. As it turned out, the Concepts were not the only ones who disliked Uai. Another 'Shi Yamato' ascended to Magnum Opus, but he didn't ascend out of love for Hana. Instead, the new 'Z' ascended because he hated his fate: And himself. Z proved to be incredibly powerful, feeding off the despair of many 'Shi Yamato' before him. Even without a sponsorship, he arrived in the Grande Library with a deceitfully simple objective: He wanted to erase 'Shi Yamato' from every world and timeline, before he could become a hurtful glitch.
This put him and Uai in an especially deep conflict. Z knew he needed Alyce to open and edit books for him and intended to manipulate her. Before he could get far in wooing the hopeless romantic, Uai purposefully started a fight with Z. In the scuffle, he managed to prove to Alyce that she didn't love just any Shi Yamato: She loved Uai only, and wouldn't let other Shi's manipulate her feelings.
And yet, it was with that sad realization that they parted. Uai also came to a sad realization: He could not defeat Z and protect Alyce. So Uai committed a taboo and forced a book open. The Grande Library itself must have agreed with his decision, because Alyce was able to 'fall' into the book as if it was Wonderland. She was sent to another world, where Z could not easily find her. As she fell down her rabbit hole, Alyce realized that Uai was going to be killed...
... Unless she could mature her soul, and become a Magician who could save him.
Personality:

☆ The Living Library ☆
Dec. 31st, 2017 02:12 amKnow as well that Alyce was born for this place. Whenever this Grande Space loses its guardian, it creates a new one. They are born like a baby chick: Having grown in an ignorant shell and then hatched. When Alyce 'hatched,' she already looked to be ten years old. However, despite her tiny appearance, she was given a very important Omnipotent duty: To guard the Library, and its books, and make sure no one tried to "play God" with them.
At this point, let's pause to acknowledge a few things. Starting with what kind of environment Alyce grew up in. The Living Library looks like a fairytale garden. Shelves are smooshed between thick trees, which grow into the 'sky' and block out the 'sun.' The Library provides for Alyce's mortal needs. She is, after all, a human at her core. The Library had a kitchen area that provides all of the food Alyce imagines herself wanting, a sleeping area with the bed she dreams of, and plenty of single player games (mostly of the board or card variety, not digital,) to amuse herself with.
The Librarian's greatest threat comes from other Omniversal Beings. These "Ascended Magicians" are beings that have transcended their mortal limits and made it to the 8th Dimension. They are on par with what you might expect from a demi-God. They are classified in three ways:
The first is the highest tier. Higher than Alyce. They are called "Concepts," and they exist everywhere and everytime. They have names like "Hope," "Love," "Calamity," and "Destruction." You might write essays in English class about how they are a theme in a novel you were forced to read. They are Omnipotent, 10th Dimensional Beings. This great status comes at the cost of their ability to interact with any dimension below the 10th. Time and Space are invalid at the 10th Dimension, which means you cannot interact with things or other beings. So in order to influence the world, Concepts will sponsor an Embodiment.
Embodiments are the second classification that Alyce needs to worry about. They are beings like herself that transcended to the 8th Dimension. They can interact with worlds and each other, unlike Concepts. However, they are not all powerful. In order to remain on the 8th Dimension, where they technically cannot exist, they get 'sponsored' by a Concept. This creates a unique cycle. Concepts get more powerful when their concept (i.e: "Hope.") is a strong influence in a World. So Embodiments go to worlds and make that influence.
For example. If we look at Madoka Kaname as an Embodiment of Hope, then her role in Madoka Magica made the Concept of Hope more powerful.
Embodiments often have their own agenda, but it co-en-sides with their Concept. They exist peacefully among themselves, following the careful rules of the Omniverse so that all of existence doesn't fall apart. Even an Embodiment of Hope and Embodiment of Despair would be expected to get along, at least at a professional level. Both Embodiments and their Concepts respect the Library and would never edit a book directly.
Which brings up the last classification, and the most worrisome: The Irregulars. They are Ascended Mages on a similar level to an Embodiment, but they do not have Sponsors. Because of that, they usually have a powerful flare and then expend all of their energy. And because they are not bound by a sponsorship, nothing stops them from wrecking havoc on Alyce's Library. Irregulars are usually very emotional and, though briefly, very powerful. Alyce frequently has to deal them coming to her Library and demanding to destroy a 'world' or edit its written record.
Knowing that, it is alarming to know that Alyce herself has no magical powers to protect herself. All Alyce can do is open books and edit them. The Library is also limited in how much it can protect her, especially when her and the Library are the targets. What the Library can do is Sponsor "Attendants," to protect Alyce and itself. Attendants do not have any of the Librarian's book privileges, but do have a desire to protect her. They are much like familiars. The Library can only Sponsor one or two at a time, but when one Attendant is destroyed then a replacement will be automatically assigned.
Hi, are you still there?
Reading all that tl;dr?
I'm so sorry.
Thus, let us dive past that headache of a world overview and take a look at Alyce's own story.
The previous Grande Librarian had been murdered. She lost sight of her job and saw herself as the God who ruled all of the books/worlds at her fingertips, and wanted to eliminate the Embodiments who threatened that narcissistic view. The Library may seem Omnipotent in how it protects its Librarian, how it had no power to destroy its own crazed protector. The Concepts and their Embodiments took it upon themselves to kill the last Grande Librarian.
This was the 76th Grande Librarian to develop a God Complex. It's quite common, and everyone expects it to one day develop in the new Librarian.
Her name was Alyce. She appeared in one of the Library's gardens within seconds of the old Librarian's death. The concept of Alyce's life was mirrored from a ten year old girl who had just died in a car accident in 4th Dimensional World. Alyce herself really doesn't remember this, but the outline of her personality was borrowed from that little girl.
She was born into the guardianship of the remaining Library Attendant, whose name she never really cared to remember. The other attendant had been very loyal to the previous Librarian and died to protect her, leaving only this one attendant behind. She was a kind and beautiful woman with long blue hair like Alyce's. Her loyalty was not to the Library, but to the ability to read and guard every world where her unborn child was, in fact, born and alive.
She taught Alyce how to manage the Library and took care of the quickly maturing girl. Alyce's body grew with her emotional development, and that seemed to come very quickly. Alyce would read about the other worlds in the books and chose to study the backstories of every Embodiment that visited her. It was while reading up on an Embodiment of Hope, "Satou," that Alyce discovered the most precious soul to her. She read every world in which the human boy "Shi Yamato" lived and died. Alyce was struck by his multi-layered personality and tragic backstory, much like how a reader falls for their favorite character.
But despite having the power to do so, Alyce was not able to break the 4th wall and reach out to any of the "Shi Yamato"s in her stories. She just followed along his life story, crying and laughing for him. Also, feeling unnecessary jealousy and heartbreak whenever his story ended with him finding his true love, Hana, and ultimately living out his life with her.
"Down with that canon ship," she wanted to say, if not for how cute she found her Best Boy in Love to be.
This changed for the ??? when a Shi Yamato ascended to the 8th Dimension. For all of the Right-Wrong Reasons: He had been banished from his home world and therefore separated from his lover. When Alyce heard of this "Uai" and learned he was really Shi Yamato, she lost her shit like a fangirl. Though he was a potential Embodiment Candidtte, Alyce claimed him as her Library Attendant first.
Seeing Alyce in new, capable hands, the previous Attendant found peace. Alyce had thought that Attendants could only die by being killed, but apparently there was a loophole: They could also choose to pass on, like ghosts finding peace. In the case of her old Attendant, the woman realized that she had found peace by seeing her child happy and alive. She had been holding on to raise the little Librarian who looked like her, but now saw Alyce was in capable hands.
Alyce was torn by this on many levels. She regretted never paying attention to her old Attendant and taking the woman fro granted. She also realized that her Uai could find peace and move on. He was tormented by his love for Hana, and if he ever made peace with their fate then he might disappear.
So Alyce vowed never to let Uai find that peace. She didn't want to lose her favorite character now that he was "hers."
Uai was content to guard the Library, which held tales where other Hanas and Shis lived happily ever after. But he was strictly loyal to his Hana, and did not find any resolution in the other stories. Fortunate for Alyce, because she would not lose him... Unfortunate for Alyce, because he would not let it go.
It was Alyce who gradually came to accept and respect that she could never have her OC x Canon crackship. Uai and her lived peacefully in the Library, but Alyce's maturity never let her age passed 17. Even then, it was just a claim the petite girl made in order to feel closer to Uai, who was more likely 19. Uai became a very capable guardian and frequently defended Alyce from Irregulars, even garnering a reputation for being a terrifying guard dog. The two of them enjoyed frequent and long periods of peace, where Embodiments would come and spoil little Alyce like she was their only niece.
Time is honestly irrelevant at the 8th Dimension. To Alyce, it felt like her time with Uai was "forever." To Uai, it felt like an eternity. Quietly, he was still suffering from losing Hana. He knew from reading the books that she was going to wait endlessly for her "One True Love," and he had doomed her by leaving. However, Uai and Alyce both believed that Uai was the only "Shi" to Ascend. They were stupid and wrong.
Their peace was shattered when Alyce's Best Boy made another appearance. Another Shi, from another timeline, had Ascended. But in his timeline, he came to realize that "Shi" was the root of his world's problems. This creatively labeled "Z" was an Irregular, with no interest in rules or Sponsorship. He went straight for the Library and straight for Alyce.
She was the only one who could open the books and make it possible for Z to annihilate "Shi Yamato." She was also Shi Yamato's #1 Fangirl and not about to let that happen. Neither was her Attendant. Being the only one with magic between them, but also unable to defeat his double, Uai sent Alyce far away. Her dropped her into one of the stories where Shi Yamato lived with the mortal Embodiments. Alyce was helpless to resist as she was separated from the Shi Yamato she loved most, and helpless to resist the fact that Z most certainly kill him.
